Srinagar, Jan 25: The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has called for the immediate acceleration of construction work and recruitment processes for the Ladakh Medical College in Leh to ensure its timely operationalisation.
The medical college was sanctioned six years ago, but FAIMA expressed deep concern over the lack of visible progress on the ground regarding infrastructure development and staffing.
In a statement, FAIMA said the prolonged delay has caused disappointment among the medical fraternity and the people of Ladakh, who have long aspired for a fully functional medical college in the Union Territory.
“Ladakh’s geographical remoteness, challenging terrain, extreme climate, and strategic significance make the presence of a medical college not just an academic necessity but a critical public health requirement,” FAIMA said.
The association said that a functional medical college would enhance tertiary healthcare services, improve access to specialist care, reduce patient referrals outside Ladakh, and foster a sustainable ecosystem for medical education, research, and workforce retention in the region.
FAIMA demanded that the construction of the medical college be expedited with clearly defined timelines and that the recruitment of medical, teaching, and technical staff be initiated immediately to ensure the facility becomes operational without further delay. It also called for the development of the college with adequate multi-speciality facilities, aligned with the healthcare needs of Ladakh.
Reaffirming its commitment, FAIMA said it is dedicated to supporting all initiatives aimed at strengthening healthcare systems across the country.
