Srinagar, May 3 : Jammu and Kashmir Minister Satish Sharma on Sunday said tourist inflow to the Union Territory is rising steadily and asserted that the “era of fear” has ended, calling for visitors to be treated well.
Referring to the newly operational train service between Jammu and Srinagar, Sharma said its capacity has increased significantly, with up to 3,000 passengers arriving daily.
“The train has started from Jammu. Earlier the capacity was 500, now it is 1,500. It is running twice, bringing around 3,000 people daily. It is packed. Tourists are not going to stop,” he said.
He said the improved situation in the region has boosted confidence among visitors. “The age of fear has ended. Many want to disturb it, but it will not happen,” Sharma said, urging people to extend hospitality to tourists from across the country.
The minister credited the administration led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for promoting tourism, saying efforts over the past year have helped normalise the situation.
“A year ago, it seemed even birds would not come. In one year, everything has become normal,” he said, adding that successful events such as the Tulip season and upcoming pilgrimages like the Amarnath Yatra and visits to Mata Vaishno Devi would further boost tourist arrivals.
Sharma said people must remain vigilant against elements trying to disrupt peace. “There are some people who make mistakes. We have to be careful, whether they are insiders or outsiders,” he said.
Describing the rail link as a “big achievement”, he thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for the project.
He also appealed to citizens to maintain cleanliness and preserve infrastructure. “We have been given a big gift. We must keep it safe and clean,” he said.
On the eve of election results, Sharma expressed hope that “good and secular forces” would prevail. “The strength of the country lies in its diversity. All communities have contributed to the nation,” he added.(KNS)
