Delhi, Nov 12: Bima Lokpal Day is celebrated every year on 11th November to mark the foundation day of establishment of the Institution of ‘Insurance Ombudsman’. In 1998 on this day, the Government of India had notified the ‘Redressal of Public Grievances Rules’.

Insurance Ombudsman is a quasi-judicial Grievance Redressal Machinery to redress complaints of insured persons against life and non-life insurance companies. The main objective is for resolution of insurance complaints in a cost effective, efficient and impartial manner.

In the year 2017, Government of India notified new rules in the matter called ‘Insurance Ombudsman Rules, 2017’. The object of these rules is “to resolve all complaints of all personal lines of insurance, group insurance policies, policies issued to sole proprietorship and micro enterprises on the part of insurance companies and their agents and intermediaries in a cost effective and impartial manner”.

The Insurance Ombudsman does not charge any fee for resolution of the complaint of the aggrieved customer of the life, general and health insurance companies. No intermediary or lawyer to require to file a complaint in this forum.

Chairman (IRDAI), Ajay Seth, addressed the participants of the 18 Insurance Ombudsman centers on this momentous occasion.

Insurance Ombudsman – Delhi Centre appealed to both Complainants and Representatives of Insurance Companies to cooperate and follow the path of conciliation and mediation in a spirit of give and take for amicable settlement in maximum number of cases.

The total number of complaints received by Delhi Centre for the year 2024–25 was 3665 and all 3665 complaints were disposed of. Thus the total disposal of complaints for Delhi centre is 100%. And of these, 69% of the complaints were disposed via mediation mode.

Online Registration of complaints has been introduced since February 2021, whereby the complainant can register their complaint anytime, from anywhere and need not visit the Office of Insurance Ombudsman. For Online registration of complaints, website www.cioins.co.in may be referred.
