Prevalence of obesity in adults

The changing lifestyle factors and eating habits in our society have immensely increased the prevalence of obesity dramatically in recent years. According to WHO, ‘most of the world's population live in countries where overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight.’ It is a fact that obesity has become a global problem and Kashmir is not an exception to that. Medical experts are of the opinion that the cases of obesity are showing an alarming increase among the young generation, over the years. Many health surveys have reported that approximately 35% of adults and 15–20% of children and adolescents are obese in the valley. However, the findings shouldn’t come as a surprise given the fact how changes are taking place in our living styles. The way we are adapting ourselves to new trends and modes of living, these kinds of diseases or health ailments are bound to increase. Known to all is that abnormal increase in the weight of a person is due to the excessive fat accumulation

Parenting Matters

Upbringing plays a vital role in character-building. If children are left on their own, they will do what no parent would approve of. Freedom is good, but unlimited freedom is an evil. In the name of modernity, parents cannot, rather should not forget their responsibilities. Nobody can succeed in polluting the minds of children unless parents wittingly or unwittingly allow it. Nowadays, so-called modern parents take less pains in teaching their children how to live a morally upright life and leave everything to teachers and educational institutions. The job cannot be entrusted only to the clergy or the teachers.

Price control

As the Eid-ul-Adha approaches, even the commodities that do not depend on monsoon, rains and crops have started flaunting price tags depicting numbers double than what was a month back. It is a shame that Kashmiris resort to such deplorable practices on festive occasions just to earn some easy bucks. On Eid-ul-Adha the consumption of mutton in the valley is high owing to the sacrificial offering which is rigorously observed by Muslims all across Jammu and Kashmir.

Nature’s fury

The turn in weather has caught us all off guard. For the past some days the clouds have shaped up dangerously. Incessant rains have led to a dangerous situation as the threat of floods in Kashmir valley is still looming large. The level of water in Jhelum and other water bodies are frighteningly pointing towards that as the Jhelum River has crossed flood declaration mark at Sangam even as the weather has started to improve slightly. Although the Meteorological Department has forecasted that weather will likely improve from Wednesday afternoon and we may pray for things to change for better in terms of weather but at the same time we should be prepared to meet the challenge in case rains refuse to stop. This is not for the first time that this situation has emerged as the result of torrential rains that have been casting a shadow over valley for the last few days. In this age and day of technology the weather forecast is readily available with a common man and the government should have

Moderation is a virtue

Being moderate in our day to day affairs is very important in order to live a peaceful life. The religion of Islam promotes and encourages moderation in all aspects of life. Many religious experts are of the opinion that moderation is a center point between two extremes. Thus being moderate helps a person to live a balanced and purposeful life. Furthermore, it is a positive and admirable trait to be within reasonable limits. Also moderation refers to an admirable character that falls between two opposite ideologies.

Assist them

According to the World Health Organization, there are currently more than 1 billion disabled people in the world. Most of the developed countries provide maximum opportunities to this section of population. But, unfortunately in this part of the globe, disabled people are still suffering from discrimination, poverty and social stigma in society. Though granted a legitimate space in a democratic set up, disabled people have often bracketed as ‘burden’ and more often than not seen fighting for their genuine and lawful rights. Why is this? There is much talk about schemes and programmes being chalked out to bring this unfortunate section of our society at par with others, in terms of rights and opportunities, but till now, things remain as a distant dream.

Environment SOS

June 5 was observed as the World Environment Day and this year the theme of the day was ‘Only One Earth’. The main focus of this day is to create awareness about the adverse impact on environment and the need to preserve it. It is a fact that protection of environment has gained a lot of importance lately at all four levels – the state level, country level, regional level and at international level. From politicians to school kids, every one speaks and writes on the issue. For the rest of the year, however, we don’t hear or see much on the issue. Even if some ‘Save Environment’ campaigns are started, they soon run out of steam. There is a need to move beyond the rhetoric of environmental protection and implement a proper action plan for change.

Child Protection Day

Every year, 1st June is observed as the International Child Protection Day. The main focus of this day is to highlight the importance of child safety and discuss the ways to achieve total well being of children in both developed and developing countries. The International Day for Protection of Children was established on 1 June 1950 following the Women's International Democratic Federation's congress in Moscow that took place in 1949. It is a fact the children are considered as the most vulnerable lot facing many problems and inhuman practices especially in the developing countries.

This incident occurred in South Kashmir’s Shopian District. During the initial investigation police have arrested three persons so far including the faith healer, husband and the brother of the deceased women. The news of this incident spread like a wild fire and was followed by severe public outburst demanding exemplary punishment to those who are involved in this heinous act. Other than fair investigations, these type of incidents calls for a thorough scrutiny of social apparatus, institutions and lacunas amidst the changing face of the society. In the last three decades, changes have been observed in almost all societies throughout the world, the U

Lifestyle disorders

In a recent interview with RISING KASHMIR, an internationally acclaimed medical scientist, Prof Dr. Syed Amin Tabish, talked in detail about various issues pertaining to healthcare scenario in India vis-à-vis issues facing healthcare delivery, medical education and offered some innovative ideas to strengthen it. He also revealed that lifestyle disorders contribute over 61 percent of all deaths in India and every 12th Indian is a diabetic as India ranks second in the list of countries with the highest diabetes patient’s ratio in the world. These stats are alarming and portray a very grim healthcare scenario in India. It is a fact that unhealthy food habits of people have given rise to many lifestyle disorders over the years and there are many factors responsible for e.g. bad habits, lack of exercise, smoking, high calorie intake, too much of junk etc. All these factors play a significant role in the mushrooming of life style disorders.

This is a much needed step taken by the administration and must be appreciated but still much more needs to be done in that regard.

World of opportunities

There is no doubt in the fact that the government cannot accommodate all those who are in search of jobs. In fact our youth waste lots of time and energy while being madly after a petty government job. Need is to find alternatives that can open up new paths and explore new fields of economic activity. Howsoever complex the structure of modern day economy may be, fact remains that the basics of economic activity remain the same. Coordination between human and material resources is still the real engine of any economy.

Drug de-addiction campaign

Last week, Falahudarain, a local NGO launched a week long drug de-addiction campaign in Bramulla district with the intent to curb the hovering drug menace in Kashmir. The campaign also tried to create awareness among the students and people at large about the serious ramifications of drug abuse in the valley. It is a good step taken by this NGO, but it needs backing and intervention of other sections of the society as well. While many programmes that highlight the adverse affects of drug abuse and addiction are held in the UT throughout the year by governmental and non-governmental organizations, it does not appear to assuage the problem. In J&K drug abuse has become a major challenge for the authorities to tackle. Over the years, the graph of drug abuse in J&K has been rising at an alarming rate. According to some reports J&K has over 600,000 drug affected people and that contributes 4.6 percent of the total population. This is a grave concern and demands greater attention from all q

Furthermore, the role and importance of family in a civilized society is of utmost importance. Family is considered as a fundamental component of any social set up. It plays an important role in any socio-economic situation but unfortunately the control of family and school is waning day by day. It is the institution of family that performs multifaceted functions and helps in the socialization of individuals.

Knowledge and information is very important for the socio economic development of a nation. If people are serious enough about acquiring knowledge and information, it is an indicator of a healthy society. In the civilized societies reading habits are inculcated in the younger generation from the very beginning. In our valley things are not as encouraging on this count as the kind of emphasis that is being given to career related education leaves little space for a taste like book reading to develop. It is very sad to find out that the entire scheme of things, that we call education, revolves round a few fixed themes and doesn’t try to expand its horizons. From the very beginning to the apex institutions of learning we make our students confine their studies to some text books and some odd notes that help them get through their exams.

Address the root

Over the years, there has been an alarming increase in the social ills in our society. Drug addiction, suicides, dowry deaths and other unlawful and immoral activities are eating the very core of our cultural identity. Exploring options

The field of medicine is expanding fast, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic that has forced countries to spend more on medical research. The diseases which at one point in time looked incurable are easily treated today. The system of medical practice that is prevalent today treats the diseases by using remedies which produce effects that are different from the disease. It evolved continuously from last two centuries thereby helping the people in getting rid of so many diseases. However, the prolonged use of the medicines has shown adverse effect on the body. By far we are aware and perhaps seen where it can lead us if we continue to plunder our forest reserves. It is a fact that human survival is at stake amid the growing problems of global warming and environmental pollution. Our forests are source of income for number of families. The forests, which are known as green gold, have been exploited to the hilt by forest smugglers and looters, over the years. The human interference in forest and in wildlife habitats has not only disturbed the natural ecology but has forced the wild animals to turn towards human dwelling which has resulted in the increasing number of man-animal conflicts. The role of the political lead

Social Changes

The traditional society which has always paid tribute to its copious culture, its art, its legacy, its ethnicity, its values and norms is now heading towards a perceivable state of degeneration and decadence. Government is the guardian of the rights of the consumers and it has to take every step to ensure implementation of existing Consumer Protection Act in letter and spirit. Government should ensure protection of interests of consumers and time bound disposal of the complaints against trade malpractices. It should hold regular awareness camps in this regard. Cooperation of NGOs in the implementation of the Consumers Act at ground level is also important

Bolster Agriculture sector

The global economic slump caused by the covid-19 pandemic is having a direct impact on many areas of the J&K economy, particularly export-driven businesses where demand has plunged to unimaginable levels.

Health Awareness

An interesting fact related to public health has come to fore recently in lesser developed countries or states where health infrastructure is inadequate. In countries and states where literacy is high and people are aware about common diseases and new researches in medical science field, the overall figures are on the brighter side. In states where literacy rate is low and where people hardly know about diseases or remedies, there is lot of burden on the public health system usually operated by state apparatus. By spreading awareness about diseases including their prevention, about different treatments and new researches that have proved to be of utility in medical sciences, the public health system could be improved.

Improving the rural living standard, by getting rid off ignorance, disease and inequality of opportunities is very crucial to the development of our UT. Not only economic uplift, there is a dire need to eliminate social inequality as well. This can be achieved by developing all the sections of the society on equal parameters.
