SKUAST-K holds awareness programme-cum-input distribution under AICRP-Millets

Srinagar, Apr 17: One day “Awareness Programme cum Input Distribution’ was conducted by DARS, SKUAST-Kashmir at KVK, Malangpora of district Pulwama Kashmir on Friday.

 

The programme was organised under All India Coordinated Research Project on Sorghum & Small Millets (AICRP- Sorghum and Small Millets) and sponsored under Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) operational at IIMR, Hyderabad.

 

More than fifty farmers from tribal areas of Doodmarg Lalpora Tral and Sangarwani Rajpora of district Pulwama were benefitted by token distribution of farm implements and millet seed for boosting millet production and its further dissemination in the area.

 

This programme holds importance in view of the role of millets in addressing the issues of climate change, increased health issues and water scarcity.

 

The programme started with an insightful overview of the awareness programme by Dr. Fayaz Ahmed Bahar, Prof. Incharge, AICRP-millets, SKUAST-Kashmir. In his lecture he highlighted the role AICRP-millets in reaching out to the farming community of the valley and its importance in sustaining the environmental and health issues of the society.

 

The audience were guided with the scientific technological knowhow for harvesting better millets yield. Dr. Ajaz Ahmad Lone, Professor GPB highlighted the contribution of DARS, SKUAST-K in advancement of varietal release and in replacement of local landraces and their deployment.

 

Dr. Javid Ahmad Mugloo, Professor & Head, PC, KVK, Malanpora while addressing the gathering assured the participants for any sort of technical assistance leading towards enhanced crop diversification and profitability.

 

He explained the role of KVK in bringing the new initiatives at doorsteps of the farming community and the farmers were encouraged by sharing their feedback for further cooperation.

 

The farmers expressed happiness and requested the organization for more such events in future. The programme concluded with an interactive session with the farmers and thanks to the chair.
