· New fleet to cut emissions in ecologically sensitive Trans-Himalayan belt
Leh, Apr 21: In a major push to clean mobility in the high-altitude Union Territory, Ladakh is set to receive 33 electric buses under the Centre’s PM-eBus Sewa programme, with the first batch expected to be rolled out within weeks, top officials told Rising Kashmir.
Sources in the administration said the project has entered an advanced stage with groundwork for operations including route planning and basic charging support being fast-tracked to ensure timely deployment.
The fleet will comprise specially designed 7-metre buses, suited for Ladakh’s narrow roads and challenging mountainous terrain.
Lieutenant Governor Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena termed the sanction a critical milestone in Ladakh’s transition toward sustainable transport stating that the move reflects a dual commitment protecting the fragile ecosystem while improving last-mile connectivity.
“This is not just about buses it is about building a future-ready, environment-friendly transport network for Ladakh,” he said.
Officials indicated that priority routes are likely to include key urban and semi-urban stretches in Leh, along with select links to peripheral and remote areas where public transport options remain limited.
The initiative is expected to ease commuting for government employees, students, and daily travellers who often rely on scarce or expensive transport services.
The e-bus rollout is also aligned with the broader vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to develop Ladakh as a carbon-neutral region.
By replacing conventional diesel buses, the new fleet is projected to significantly cut emissions in the ecologically sensitive Trans-Himalayan belt.
Insiders say the administration is simultaneously exploring expansion plans, including scaling up electric mobility infrastructure and integrating renewable energy sources such as solar power for charging stations further reinforcing Ladakh’s green transition roadmap.
Once operational, the e-buses are expected to not only reduce pollution but also transform the overall public transport experience offering quieter, more efficient, and affordable travel across the region.
