Mukhtar had constructed property on state land Turning point in enforcement strategy, say police
Srinagar, Apr 15: In a landmark move signalling an intensified crackdown on drug networks, south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Wednesday witnessed its first-ever demolition of properties belonging to a notorious drug peddler, marking a decisive shift in the fight against narcotics in Jammu and Kashmir.
The demolition was carried out at the Rakh-e-Lajura area of the district, where authorities razed structures linked to Mukhtar Ahmad Bhat of Kunjipora, Pulwama. The properties had earlier been attached under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Officials said the action was not only unprecedented in the district but also sends a strong message against the growing menace of drug trafficking. “Not only were these properties raised from proceeds of narcotics trade, but these were also built on state (government) land,” officials said, highlighting the seriousness of the violations.
The demolition was conducted in the presence of officials from the district administration, reflecting a coordinated and firm approach to dismantling the financial foundations of the drug trade.
According to police, Bhat is facing multiple cases under the NDPS Act. At Police Station Pulwama, FIR No. 306/2007 under Sections 15/18, FIR No. 41/2020 under Section 8/15, and FIR No. 73/2010 under Sections 15/18 stand registered against him. Additionally, FIR No. 93/2024 under Section 8/22 NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Litter.
A police official, wishing anonymity, told Rising Kashmir that the action marks a turning point in enforcement strategy. “Since Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha rolled out the 100-day war on drugs, Pulwama has taken a lead in targeting not just peddlers but the entire ecosystem sustaining the trade. This demolition is a first of its kind and a clear warning that illegal assets will not be spared,” the official said.
LG Sinha has consistently maintained a zero-tolerance approach towards drug trafficking, asserting that those involved in the narcotics trade will face the full force of the law. He has emphasised that the campaign is not limited to arrests but extends to dismantling the entire network, including the seizure and destruction of properties acquired through illegal means.
The LG also called for cancellation of Aadhaar cards, passports and driving licenses of those involved in drug trafficking. He called for coordinated efforts between police, civil administration, and the public to eradicate the drug menace from society.
The move is being seen as a major escalation in the anti-drug campaign, with authorities targeting both the operational and financial networks of drug peddlers.
Officials said such stringent measures will continue, ensuring that those involved in the narcotics trade face both legal action and the loss of unlawfully acquired wealth.
