Srinagar, Jan 28: As the valley is reeling under severe cold wave conditions, most parts of Kashmir Friday recorded sub-zero temperatures, while Meteorological Department has forecasted that prevailing weather conditions would continue till January 31st onward.
In-charge Director MeT, Farooq Ahmad Bhat told Rising Kashmir that they were expecting a further dip in minimum temperatures. "During the next two-three days, there will be warmer days and colder nights in the region,” he said.
Bhat said dry and cold weather will likely continue till Jan 31 in both J&K and Ladakh. “During the 31 Jan-01 Feb, there are chances of very light snowfall and rains in isolated parts of the region,” he said.
As per MeT data, several parts of Kashmir witnessed sub-zero temperatures on Friday night resulting in partial freezing of water bodies. Tapes and water bodies remained frozen in most parts of the Valley.
Srinagar recorded -3.6 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam settled at a low of minus 11.8 degrees Celsius and was the coldest place in Valley, Gulmarg at minus 104. Degrees Celsius, Qazigund at minus 4 degrees Celsius, while Kupwara, settled at minus 4.6 degrees Celsius.
The 40 days of Chillai Kalan are followed by 20 days of Chillai Khurd, which translates to small cold, and 10 days of chille bach (literally, baby cold). This winter, minimum temperatures plummeted to -6.5 degrees Celsius in Srinagar on Dec 18 last year.
As per the advisory issued by traffic police headquarters for Saturday, LMVs (Passenger)/private Cars shall be allowed from both sides on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. TCU Jammu/Srinagar shall liaise with TCU Ramban before releasing the traffic, it said.
While after 2 pm, HMVs, load carriers shall be allowed from Navyug tunnel (Qazigund side) towards Jammu after assessing the traffic situation on NHW,” it said.

If people don’t cooperate, we can’t save Dal Lake: Ghazala Abdullah

Ghazala Abdullah (GA): It was 2001 when J&K Lakes Conservation & Management Authority (LC&MA) formed Watershed Management Division in order to look after issues emerging from catchment areas and to address them as per the required resources available. Most people are not aware of our functioning. Dal and its catchment areas are like a bowl shaped. Once there is rainfall, all runoff and other waste from the landmass directly drains out into the Dal which becomes a reason the water body gets muddied and at many places chocked.
