Srinagar, Jan 25: Three civilians and a policeman were injured on Tuesday after suspected militants hurled a grenade towards a police party in Hari Singh High Street area of Srinagar.
The injured were identified as Asmat Bano, wife of Zahoor Ahmad Hajam of Charar-i-Shareef, a couple -Tanveera and her husband Muhammad Shafi Bhat of Chattabal, and a police cop Tanveer Ahmad.
The attack has come a day before the January 26 celebrations when the Army, BSF, CRPF, and J&K Police are on high alert particularly in the Kashmir valley. Windowpanes of some shops shattered due to the explosion of the grenade.
The injured civilians were rushed to the hospital where their condition is stated to be stable.
Dr. Kanwaljeet Singh, Medical Superintendent SMHS hospital said the injured were admitted to the hospital. Their condition is stable and out of danger, he said.
Soon after the incident, the joint teams of CRPF and Police launched the search operation in the area to nab the attackers. Meanwhile, police have registered a case in this matter.
Inspector General of Police, (IGP), Kashmir Zone Vinay Kumar said they have a arrested grenade thrower involved in the attack.
In a tweet, Police said, "Srinagar Police arrested grenade thrower who was involved in today’s #terror incident at Hari Singh High Street Srinagar in which a few civilians and one police personnel got injured. Investigation is going on," Kumar said.
IGP said the accused has been identified as Aijaz Ahmad Wani son of Fayaz Ahmad Wani resident of Fatehkadal Srinagar.
Earlier, police spokesman in a statement said that unknown “terrorists” hurled a grenade upon a Police vehicle near Hari Singh High Street, Srinagar.
“In this terror incident, however, few civilians sustained minor splinter injuries, besides causing minor damage to the police vehicle,” he said.
The spokesman said all the injured were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, where they have been discharged after required treatment.
“Senior Police officers immediately reached the crime spot. The area has been cordoned and search in the area is going on,” he said.
Meanwhile, Police have registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law and an investigation is in progress. Officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of the “terror” crime.
