People shuffled to safer places

Posted on Jun 23, 2022 | Author Aatif Qayoom
Srinagar, June 22: Amid the incessant rains, several parts of the city faced severe water logging on Thursday, disrupting normal life.

The parts of  Bemina were heavily waterlogged after intermittent rains lashed the city. The water also entered some houses in the locality, and people were seen moving to safer places to save themselves.

Roads were also flooded in parts of the city in areas such as Garipora and Bemina, along with other low-lying areas.

According to an official of SMC, "With heavy rainfall lashed the city since Monday night, several areas have been inundated and are witnessing waterlogging."

Residents said as the heavy rains continued for 2-3 days, the water level in local streams increased, resulting in the area being submerged.

Bashir Ahmed, a local, told Rising Kashmir that after the 2014 floods, this was the first time this area was submerged again. They said the water has also entered many houses.

Ahmad said "The wounds of the 2014 floods are still fresh in our minds. The flood also shattered our dreams. We never thought that Srinagar would witness floods like this. But after 2014, we always remained vigilant whenever it rains for 2 continuous days."

"When we woke up this morning, the situation was the same. The water flow was very slow, and slowly it started rising. But this time the water didn't rise."

Emotional scenes were witnessed in Bemina, where mainly children and women were leaving their houses to move to safer places.

Notably, authorities on Wednesday sounded a floodalarm in Srinagar after Jhelum breached the 16-ft mark at Ram Munshibagh here.

An official of SDRF told Rising Kashmir that they received a distress call from the Garipora area and a team from SDRF was sent to the scene to rescue the people.

He said when the team reached the spot. The whole locality was submerged. The roads in the locality were also submerged."All the people were rescued safely and no damage or injury was reported from the scene."

Meanwhile, the district administration said all the men and machinery were pressed into the Bemina area to provide safety to people.

Meanwhile, an official of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) told Rising Kashmir, that men and machinery were put on high alert amid heavy rains. He said in the city centre there was no waterlogging.
