Says No Relaxation on School Transport Norms
Srinagar, Apr 28: Senior Superintendent of Police Traffic City Srinagar, Aijaz Ahmad, on Tuesday has said that strict enforcement of transport laws will continue in the city, with no relaxation for vehicles violating prescribed safety norms for school transport.
Speaking to Rising Kashmir, the officer addressed the issue of private vans being used by schools to ferry students. He said such vehicles are not permitted if they fail to meet the standards laid down under Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 063, which governs safety requirements for school transport.
“Law is equal for all. No one will be allowed to violate the norms,” he said, adding that whether the vehicles are arranged by parents or hired by school authorities, compliance with safety standards is mandatory.
He pointed out that many private vans currently in use do not fall within the prescribed standards and therefore cannot be allowed for transporting school children. He stressed that these rules are meant to ensure student safety and cannot be ignored.
The SSP said that the Traffic Department has engaged with school authorities and other stakeholders before moving ahead. “We are not taking decisions in isolation. We are listening to all stakeholders and addressing their concerns,” he said.
He acknowledged that some schools have raised issues regarding fleet management and the financial burden of owning compliant vehicles. According to him, many institutions depend on hired transport due to these constraints.
To address this, the department has suggested a phased transition. Schools have been advised to gradually replace non-compliant vehicles with those that meet the required norms. He said the authorities have agreed to this approach, though it will take some time for full implementation.
“We have not shown any undue haste, but ultimately, compliance will be compulsory,” he added.
He also expressed concern over minors driving vehicles, calling it a serious threat to road safety. He said strict action will be taken against such violations to ensure safer roads across Srinagar.
