Lethpora, Feb 21: The Jammu Srinagar Highway was blocked at Lethpora for several hours on Tuesday as the locals demanded regular electricity in the area.
The blockade resulted into traffic jam spanning over 4 kilometers on the highway were traffic movement is already curtailed due to bad weather persisting in valley from last few days.
To disperse crowds, police used teargas to disperse the crowds.
Locals showed resentment over the use of force by police.
The people alleged that the Power Development Department has turned a blind eye towards the poor power supply in the area.
“We have been patient for a long, but authorities have taken us for ride,” said a local while talking to Rising Kashmir.
The people also complained about the billing system and they said PDD is violating the agreements.
“We demand that the PDD should look into the irregularity of the bills and at the same time our power supply should come from the special line that has been provided to the security forces in the area,” said another local.
Assistant Commissioner Revenue (ACR), Pulwama, Dr Naseer Lone who was present on the spot, while talking to Rising Kashmir said that the authorities from the PDD assured people that immediate action will be taken to sort the issues.
Traffic jam caused inconvenience to hundreds of passengers as they remained stranded due to the blockade. Most of the Srinagar bound local commuters returned after waiting for a long time.
“I had an appointment with a doctor in Srinagar. But after waiting for several hours, I returned home. It was a messy traffic jam,” said Tawseef Ahmad, a resident of a far flung village in South Kashmir’s Islamabad district.
