Police Thursday stopped Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) from staging a protest demonstration at Lal Chowk in Srinagar against human rights violations in Kashmir and detained KEA Co-Chairman, Farooq Ahmed Dar and Vice Chairman, Ajaz Ahmad Shahdhar near Ghanta Ghar.
They were whisked away to Kothi Bagh Police Station.
Co-Chairman of KEA, Farooq Ahmad Dar said they had planned for a peaceful protest but were not allowed.
“We were supposed to take out a peaceful protest from Ghanta Ghar to Forest lane but as soon as we stepped out of a vehicle, we were detained,” he said.
Dar said civilian killings should stop and that there should be zero tolerance against civilian killings in every district.
“Even an 18-month-old child was not spared and she lost sight in an eye. We request the authorities to try their best to put an end to human rights violations which has engulfed entire Kashmir,” he said referring to Hiba, who was recent hit by pellets in an eye during the action by the government forces on protestors in south Kashmir.
Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik had called for peaceful protests against human rights violations in Kashmir to mark the ongoing human rights week.
Human Rights Day is celebrated annually across the world on December 10 every year.
