Srinagar, Mar 29: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has disclosed that 13 abandoned school buildings have been identified in the Pattan educational zone of Baramulla district in north Kashmir, with five of them reported as damaged. The information was provided by the education minister Sakina Itoo in response to a question raised by MLA Javaid Riyaz in the Legislative Assembly. According to the minister, several school buildings constructed
under various government schemes over the years, particularly under the erstwhile Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and other initiatives, remain incomplete and abandoned in Baramulla district. The reasons cited include cost escalation and the transition of SSA and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) into the integrated Samagra Shiksha scheme. “In Zone Pattan, a total of thirteen (13) abandoned school buildings have been identified, out of which five (05)
have suffered damage,” the minister informed the House. The government further stated that the Directorate of Samagra Shiksha has been directed to compile a comprehensive list of all such abandoned school infrastructure. The exercise will include assessing the financial requirements needed for their completion and subsequent operationalization. The initiative aims to address infrastructure gaps in the education sector and ensure that incomplete projects are revived for public use.
