Srinagar, Sept 8:
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah today led party workers in paying tributes to the founder of National Conference Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah on his 28th death anniversary at his mausoleum at Naseem Bagh here.

In a low key affair, the party leaders arrived the graveyard of the Sheikh -- father of Farooq and grandfather of Omar -- and paid floral tributes to the late leader, also known as Shere-i-Kashmir (the Lion of Kashmir). The attendance at the mausoleum was very low due to the curfew imposed by authorities in view of the prevailing law and order situation. Later Farooq Abdullah, who is Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, released a book written by Professor Mohammad Malik on "Role of National Conference in Politics of Jammu and Kashmir". Governor N N Vohra paid tributes to Abdullah and recalled his contribution to the development of the State. Although Omar did not speak to the media persons at the venue, he issued a message paying tribute to his grand father, recalling his contributions to Kashmir's history. "It was his tireless effort and leadership that galvanised the oppressed people of the state to rise against autocracy and injustice," the Chief Minister said."The best tributes to the late leader would be to follow his footsteps in letter and spirit and renew our commitment on the path of communal brotherhood, non-violence and equitable development of all regions," he added.
