A militant and an Army man were killed in a gunfight at Ratnipora area of south Kashmir's Pulwama district, police said on Tuesday.
Based on a credible input about the presence of militants in Ratnipora area of Pulwama, a cordon and search operation was launched jointly by Police, Army and CRPF in the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, police spokesman said.
He said as the searches were going on, the search party was fired upon by the militants.
The fire was retaliated leading to a gunfight. "In the ensuing encounter,a militant was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter," police spokesman said adding that his identity and affiliation is being ascertained.
He said that in the encounter two forces personnel also sustained gunshot injuries and were evacuated to hospital for treatment.
However, one among them identified as Baljeet Singh succumbed.
An Army official also said that a militant and one Army man were killed in the gunfight. Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter, police said in a statement.
Police has registered a case and initiated investigation in the matter.
Police has requested people not to venture inside encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials.
