Residents raise concerns over water contamination
Ganderbal, Apr 09: Large numbers of dead fish have been discovered in a spring located in the Beehama area of central Kashmir's Ganderbal district, raising serious concerns among residents over possible water contamination and environmental degradation.
Locals said the incident has been ongoing for the past three days, with not a single fish reportedly seen alive in the once-thriving spring near Beehama Jamia Mosque. The spring, known for its clear waters and abundance of fish, has long been a point of attraction for residents and visitors alike.
A local resident expressed deep concern, saying that water is one of nature's greatest blessings and the spring had always been home to large fish that people would feed with rice and grains. "Earlier, the water was clean and full of life. People would gather here to watch and feed the fish. But now, for the last three days, there is complete mortality. Not a single fish is alive," he said.
He added that he personally retrieved dead fish from the spring to show others the alarming situation. "This is not normal. It could be a natural calamity or something else. The authorities must investigate," he urged.
According to locals, officials from the Fisheries Department and environmental experts have already visited the site, collected samples, and taken photographs for further examination.
Residents have appealed to the concerned departments to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, demanding that water samples be tested to determine whether contamination, infection, or any chemical substance may have caused the mass deaths.
"We request the authorities to take immediate action and carry out on-spot inspections. If there is any pollution or harmful activity involved, strict legal action should be taken," the local added.
