A cloud burst, followed by landslides and flash floods hit the Kullan area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Sunday and blocked the traffic on Sonamarg-Leh highway while 5 houses also suffered minor damage.
On Sunday late afternoon, the traffic on Sonamarg-Leh highway was blocked after landslides triggered by flashfloods hit Kullan area of Ganderbal.
An eyewitness told Rising Kashmir that flash-floods occurred in a Nallah in the upper part of Kullan village and damaged 5 residential houses while crop on 27 canals was completely destroyed.
Following the incident, the district administration along with local police started clearance operation on the highway.
An official at District Administration told Rising Kashmir they had pressed men and machinery to clear the silt and mud from the highway and highway will likely be re-opened on Monday.
As per the official, few houses have suffered partial damage and inmates were evacuated to avoid any misadventure.
“Around 90-100 vehicles are stranded on both sides of the highway and after clearing silt, the traffic would be allowed to ply on both sides,” the official said.
On 17 July, several residential houses and shops were damaged after a massive landslide hit Bonibagh area of Kangan in the district.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, isolated places in Kashmir received light rainfall due to which humidity level has was increased. Hailstorm also caused damage to crops and fruits in several areas of Katch area of KhanSahib Budgam.
A weatherman at the meteorological department said there will be no change in the current weather system and there is no forecast of heavy or light rains in the region.
