55 units already established in Shangus

Srinagar, Apr 04: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Saturday informed the Legislative Assembly that the Khull Chohar Fisheries Unit in Shangus constituency of Anantnag is being upgraded to strengthen infrastructure, improve productivity and enhance efficiency.

Replying to a query raised by MLA Reyaz Ahmad Khan, the Minister in charge of Agriculture Production, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Cooperative and Election Departments said that steps have already been taken during the current financial year.

He said that in 2025–26, two trout raceways have been established at the unit under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP). To ensure a steady water supply, a 2-foot diameter pipeline has also been laid from the source to the raceways.

The minister said the department is providing technical assistance, training and support to fishermen and fish farmers to enhance skills and livelihoods. He said capacity-building programmes under Human Resource Development are being conducted through schemes including HADP (Kisan Sampark Abhiyan), Agricultural Technology Management Agency and Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme.

“These programmes are aimed at promoting modern aquaculture practices and improving livelihood opportunities,” he said, adding that such initiatives will continue in 2026–27, subject to availability of funds.

Highlighting progress, the minister said 55 fisheries units have been established under schemes including PMMSY, RKVY, MGNREGA and the District Trout Programme.

He said applications from beneficiaries are being considered on merit under Centrally Sponsored Schemes and UT Capex to strengthen the fisheries sector in the region.
