Hails his contribution towards theatre in Kashmir
Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art Culture and Languages (JKAACL) and Radio Kashmir, Srinagar organized a talk-cum-interactive session with noted theatre artist and humorist, Shadi Lal Koul here on Tuesday.
The interaction titled ‘Naamwar’- a get together with the eminent personalities of Jammu and Kashmir was attended by several artists and civil society members.
Speaking on the occasion Dr Aziz Hajini, Secretary JKAACL said the Academy would continue to host such events in future. “Today, we have invited a prominent theatre artist here. There are many artists in the valley but Shadi Lal’s versatile acting makes him more special. He is the best actor,” he said.
“We have conducted such events in the past as well and we are getting a good response from the people. Through this event, we want to make people aware about the great personalities and their contribution in different fields. This program has an archival importance as well and is one of the best programs of Radio Kashmir,” he said.
Sharing his experiences, Chief Guest, Shadi Lal said he was honoured and humbled by the gesture of the twin organizations who afforded him the opportunity to directly interact with the people.
“I am honoured and humbled by this gesture,” he said. Koul said his career in acting began with the humorous serial “Tasruf” which earned him awards. “This serial boosted my confidence and groomed me for bigger things in the field of acting and theatre. It gives me happiness and satisfaction when I act in the humorous plays and serials. I love to make people laugh,” Koul said adding that he has faced different challenges to continue the theatre. “But against all odds, I moved ahead. I believe passion and dedication always make a person successful,” he said.
He said only his family especially his mother and wife supported him. “At that time, people were not supportive and we had no facilities. We had to book the hall and pay for it.”
Some of the famous serials of Koul are Tasruf, Kong Tihij, Ghulam Begum Badshah, Shah Rag and others.
Speaking on the occasion, Station Director, Radio Kashmir, Srinagar, Syed Humayun Qaisar said the theatre movement by Shadi Lal Koul was inspiring.
He also praised and congratulated Koul for her contribution in the field of art and theatre. “New generation lacks dedication and seriousness in theatre. Even there are no theatre groups. We have some theatre groups in some villages but in Srinagar such groups are hardly seen,” Qaisar added.
Qaisar said there is an issue with the scripting here.
“We are jointly organising this programme. We received positive feedback from different places which itself attests that Radio has a large audience and listenership,” he said.
Earlier, prominent actor and Director, Ayash Arif, presented an in-depth paper on life and works of Shadi Lal Koul.
“Shadi Lal ji was working with the Sales Tax department. He had been suspended many times, but he did not stop theatre and acting. Such was the level of his passion towards the theatre,” he said.
A question-answer session was also held on the occasion in which the audience actively participated and posed questions to Koul mostly based on his serials in the past and the challenges he faced in his life.
As a token of affection, the organizers presented him a shawl and a citation. The program was attended by a large number of people from various walks of life. Prominent among those who attended the event include Shabir Mujahid, Mushtaq Bala, Mehraj-ud-Din, Salamudin Bajad, G R Hasrat Gadda, Mushtaq Ahmad Wani, Shahid Hussain Farooqi, Gulshan Badrani, Inayat Gul and Shabnum Tilgami.
