IED defused at HMT, 2 injured in army firing

Srinagar, Jan 13:

 Army on Saturday defused 5-kgs Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in HMT area in outskirts of Srinagar while two persons were injured in army firing in the area in a separate incident.
CRPF spokesperson, Rajesh Yadav said a search operation was launched by troops in HMT area in early morning after inputs were received that an IED has been planted on the highway.
He said after receiving inputs, CRPF, police and army men launched a cordon and search operation in HMT and its adjoining areas.
“During the operation, services of dog squad and bomb squad were also pressed into service. And during the operation, an IED was detected on a road,” Yadav said.
He said the traffic on the highway was suspended and the area sealed off.
The experts of army’s Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) were rushed to the spot and they defused the IED, which was weighing 5 kgs.
Later, the traffic movement was restored on the highway.
Four policemen were killed in IED blast triggered by Jaish-e-Muhammad militants in Sopore area of north Kashmir last week.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident two persons were injured in army firing in the same area.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar, Imtiyaz Ismail, a naka was established by army in the area after receiving inputs about movement of militants.
He said the army men manning the naka signalled a vehicle to stop. “When it failed to stop, army men opened fire in which two persons were injured.”
“One has received injury on hand and another on thigh,” Ismail said.
Asked whether any arrests have been made, he said, “One person was detained for questioning. However, he was let off.”
“We have registered a case in the incident and launched investigations,” he added.
