Srinagar, Apr 11: The tourist destination of Gulmarg has come under fresh scrutiny after a viral video purportedly showed garbage strewn across the snow at Phase 1 of the resort, allegedly left behind by a Mumbai-based film crew following a recent shoot.

The video, shared by Instagram handle @himalayan_edges, has triggered widespread outrage in the valley and on social media platforms. The footage shows plastic bags, food waste, bottles and other debris scattered across the otherwise pristine snow-covered landscape.

In the video, the person recording can be heard criticising the crew for their negligence. “They have simply dumped all their trash on the spot and left. They haven’t bothered to pick it up or do anything about it,” he says, adding, “What will tourists think when they come here? We don’t need such film units who damage Gulmarg.”

The clip quickly drew sharp reactions online, with users expressing concern over environmental degradation at one of Kashmir’s most popular tourist destinations.

Many termed the incident unacceptable, saying Gulmarg is not a dumping ground. “Authorities must impose heavy penalties on such crews,” several users said.

Several social media users also tagged J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the video and called for action.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer, Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA), Tariq Hussain Naik, could not be contacted for comment.

However, a GDA official told Rising Kashmir that the site was cleared immediately after the incident. “Due to strong winds, a garbage bag fell from a crew member’s hand and got scattered on the snow. Before it could be cleaned, someone filmed it and made it viral. The department promptly cleared the area,” the official said.

He added that a notice has been issued to the line producer of the film crew, warning against such negligence in the future.
