Govt pulls 9TV off the air

Srinagar, Sept 09:
District Magistrate, Srinagar has directed Senior Superintendent of Police to close down the transmission of 9 TV channel after it aired the provocative speeches and activities of secessionist politicians, creating law and order problem in the district.

Office of the District Magistrate said in a press statement that after monitoring news and other programs, it was found that 9 TV was giving wide coverage to separatist calls for strikes and shutdowns and showing stone pelting protesters attacking CRPF bunkers in such a way that could create law and order problem in the city.
Before issuing the prohibitory orders, authorities served several notices to the cable channel to bar from instigating violence which is against the Cable Television Network (Regulation) Act of 1995, but they failed to reply, authorities said.  
“After examining the matter, I have reached to the conclusion that telecasting of such provocative programmes by 9TV Channel are in contravention to the provisions of Cable Television Network (Regulation ) Act, 1995 and , as such, it has become expedient to close down the transmission of the above said channel, ” District Magistrate, Srinagar said.
