An encounter between militants and the state government forces is underway in Awneera village of district Shopian.
Police officials told Rising Kashmir that an army man has been killed while four other armymen have been injured so far in the ongoing encounter.
They said heavy exchange of fire is going on between militants and the state government forces.
Rising Kashmir has lernt that three militants are believed to be trapped inside a residential house in Awneera.
Local sources told Rising Kashmir that massive clashes erupted near the encounter site in Awneera.
They said people from adjacent areas thronged Awneera and pelted stone of the state government forces to help militants escape.
Police officials told Rising Kashmir that: “The operations had to be stopped for a brief period of time due to heavy stone pelting. The operation was soon resumed.”
The state government forces resorted to heavy tear smoke shells and pellet firing to disperse the protesting people.
Reports reaching Rising Kashmir newsroom said that several civilians have been injured after the state forces resorted to pellet firing near the encounter site.
However, Rising Kashmir could not verify the reports about the injured people.
There were also reports that a mosque was blasted by the state government forces in the same area.
However, a police official told Rising Kashmir that: “There was no damage to any mosque caused in Shopian. Rumour mongers are trying to vitiate the atmosphere. Action will be taken against such elements.”
