Srinagar, Sep 25: One person died and 15 others were hospitalized after outbreak of Cholera in the remote village of Hallan in Verinag of south Kashmir’s Islamabad district on Saturday.
Reports confirm that Nazir Ahmad Khatana (43) son of Kalla Khatana of Hallan Kapran died in a hospital in Verinag on Saturday while 15 others are undergoing treatment.
Locals said that the disease broke two days ago after consuming tap-water from a tank constructed by the Public Health Engineering Department. However, PHE officials denied the sayings of public.
“The locals are using water from a nearby spring whose water got contaminated by the recent heavy downpour in the hills, while the water supplied by PHE from the tank reservoir is completely safe. The entire reservoir is closed from all sides, so there is no question of water getting contaminated in it,” said Assistant Executive Engineer, PHE sub-division Dooru-Verinag.
As soon as the news of the death of a person due to cholera spread, panic gripped the entire area. A team of doctors led by Block Medical Officer, Dr Rukhsana along with police and civil officials visited the affected village.
Doctoral team advised people to be cautious and use boiled water for all drinking purposes. The doctors also issued certain guidelines to the people of affected village and the areas adjacent to it.
