Human bites, electric burns and torture marks on body: Gujjar leader
SIT to probe murder, Mehbooba expresses outrage
In a gruesome incident, an 8-year-old nomad girl was allegedly raped and brutally killed after abduction in Hiranagar tehsil of Kathua district.
On January 10, Shifa daughter of Mohammed Yousaf of Rasana in Hiranagar was taking her horses for drinking water when she was last seen by a local woman in the village at around 3:30 pm.
“The girl did not return home and the family feared that he she has been abducted and approached police station Hiranagar next morning,” a family member of the girl told Rising Kashmir.
He said they were unable to understand where the girl has gone?
“The policemen never visited the village for investigation purpose to trade the abducted girl despite registering an FIR,” he said.
The family members said on Wednesday morning a local made a phone call to one of the family members and informed them that he has seen body of Shifa.
“The family members alongwith police team rushed there and found the body of the girl. Police shifted body to the hospital for post mortem. It triggered protest demonstration,” they said.
A Gujjar leader Talib Hussain told Rising Kashmir that had police acted on time, the life of the minor girl could have been saved.
“There were torture marks and human bites on her body. She was also allegedly given electric shocks. There are marks of human teeth on her cheeks and her arms and legs are broken. She was allegedly raped. We remember that night electricity went all of sudden after transformer developed mysterious snag and next morning, the body of the girl was found,” he said.
Hussain said the family members apprehend involvement of local youth from the village.
“They are in shock. They fear if they disclose name of suspected persons, the villagers may force them to leave from there. They are poor people,” he said.
He alleged that girl’s family fear that locals would make their lives miserably if they name the suspected persons.
“We only want police to act professionally and arrest the accused persons. We know main accused is from this village where we live,” Hussain said.
The government has formed Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the girl’s death.
The SIT would be headed by SDPO Border (Kathua) Raghuvir Singh.
A police official said the SIT has started probe to identity and arrest the accused.
Meanwhile, a team led by chairperson of J&K State Commission for Women visited the bereaved nomad family and directed SIT to investigate the manner.
The nomad family of Mohammed Yousaf moves from Kashmir to Kathua during winters and in summer they would move to upper reaches in Kashmir.
In Kathua, they purchased their own land and constructed a house there to live in peace.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed outrage over the killing of eight-year-old girl in Kathua.
She took to Twitter to express her resentment and also assured of investigation into the case.
“Outraged by the heinous incident in which a young Bakerwal girl has lost her life. Incidents like this will be investigated expeditiously & the guilty will be punished," Mehbooba tweeted.
