6 civilians among 12 dead in avalanches in Valley

At least 12 persons including six civilians, five Army men, and a BSF man were killed in different avalanches in Kashmir, officials said Tuesday.
They said heavy snowfall during the past two days triggered avalanches in Machil and Naugam sectors in north Kashmir and Kangan area in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
Heavy snowfall triggered an avalanche at Kullan village of Kangan in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district in which nine civilians were trapped.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ganderbal, Khalil Ahmad Poswal told Rising Kashmir that nine civilians were trapped in the avalanche.
Subsequently, after receiving information about the incident, the rescue teams were sent to the area.
“Rescue operation was launched during which four civilians died while five others were rescued,” he said.
The deceased were identified as Muhammad Sadiq Theckry, 70, son of Chandiya Theckry of Kullan. His two sons Showkat Ahmad Theckry, 30, and Ishtiyaq Ahmad Theckry, 22, were died in the avalanche. Other two deceased are Dawood Ahmad Kanshi, 70, son of Rehmatulla Kanshi of Gagangeer and Mohammad Akber Bhat, 38, son of Mohammad Ramzan of Gagangeer.
In another avalanche a family of four was trapped in Tulail area of Gurez in Bandipora district, reports said.
They were recovered from the debris. However, one among them identified as Abdul Rehman succumbed later.
On Monday two teenage girls Shagufta and Meema were trapped in avalanche debris at Dudran in Uri area in Baramulla district. Later, they were rescued by locals, said officials.
In Kupwara district, an avalanche occurred at Maidan Behak area of Machil near the Line of Control (LoC) in which five Army men were trapped on Monday night.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kupwara Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar told Rising Kashmir that immediately after receiving information about avalanche a rescue operation was launched and trapped Army men were recovered from the debris.
“Four of them died while another was being treated at a local hospital,” he said.
The upper reaches of Valley received heavy snowfall while plains received moderate snow and rainfall during past two days, cutting off remote areas from the main city Srinagar.
SSP Kupwara said near about two dozen houses were also damaged and livestock killed in different villages in the region.
Another Police officer said an avalanche hit an Army post in Tangdhar sector near LoC in Kupwara on Tuesday morning.
He said six Army personnel were trapped under the avalanche debris and among them one died while five others were rescued.
“Among the rescued personnel, one is injured,” the officer said.
According to reports, a BSF man died while six others were rescued after an avalanche hit them near LoC in Nougam sector in Kupwara district last night.
“Six were rescued but one constable died,” a BSF official said.
The deceased BSF man was identified as Ganga Bara, a resident from West Bengal.
