Member of Parliament, Chowdry Mohammad Ramzan attended a high-level meeting where Members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Food Distribution and Consumer Affairs, Chief Secretaries , Commissioner Secretaries and the Managing Directors and CEOs of various banks including State Bank of India, Indian Bank and Canara Bank were present, where several critical public-interest issues were discussed.
During the meeting, MP Chowdry Mohammad Ramzan highlighted the urgent concerns related to food security, pointing out that the distribution of food grains and essential ration items under the National Food Security framework is still based on the 2011 beneficiary survey. He stressed that after a gap of nearly 14 years, socio-economic conditions and population dynamics have changed significantly, resulting in many eligible beneficiaries being excluded from food security coverage. He strongly emphasised that until a fresh survey is conducted, an alternative arrangements must be put in place to provide food grains and essential supplies to eligible left-out beneficiaries, so that no deserving family is deprived of its right to food security. His proposal was lauded by other members of the Committee.
He highlighted serious consumer complaints regarding the alleged distribution of substandard “plastic rice” under the public distribution system and sought a clear factual clarification from the authorities, along with details of actions taken if the complaints are found to be valid. He firmly stressed that food safety and quality are non-negotiable, especially in welfare schemes for the poor and vulnerable, and called for strict quality checks, transparent monitoring, and stringent action to ensure such incidents do not recur and to restore public confidence in the food supply system.
MP also raised serious concerns regarding prevailing banking policies, particularly the disparity between high loan interest rates charged to customers, often ranging between 11% to 14% and the comparatively low interest returns of around 5% to 6% offered on deposits. While acknowledging the substantial profits, running into thousands of crores, reported by banks, as highlighted by the banking officials present, he underlined that customers and depositors are the backbone of the banking system. He stressed that a balanced, transparent, and fair interest rate policy must be reviewed and implemented in the larger public interest.
Drawing attention to digital banking, he highlighted that while UPI transactions are largely charge-free, customers are burdened with charges on transactions carried out through debit and credit cards, often without their informed consent or adequate awareness. He pointed out that most customers are unaware of these hidden charges, which cumulatively impose an unnecessary financial burden on ordinary citizens. He urged that this charging mechanism be comprehensively reviewed and waived off in the larger public interest, so that digital banking remains affordable, transparent, and truly inclusive, particularly for common people, small account holders, and first-time digital users.
Another major concern raised pertained to customer service standards and human sensitivity within banks. Hon’ble MP highlighted that customers, senior citizens are often not treated with the professionalism, courtesy, and respect they deserve. He firmly asserted that people are the real strength of banks, and any compromise on their dignity undermines the very essence of public-oriented banking.
He stressed that arrogance, unruly conduct, or insensitive behaviour by bank staff is unacceptable and must be dealt with strictly, with serious and deterrent action taken against such misconduct. He further emphasised the urgent need to ensure dedicated facilities for common people, senior citizens and persons with disabilities, including adequate seating, priority assistance at counters, barrier-free access, and the mandatory availability of basic amenities such as clean toilets and washrooms at all bank branches, so that banking services remain inclusive, accessible and citizen-centric.
The Member Parliament, Chowdry Mohammad Ramzan, was warmly felicitated and accorded a gracious welcome by senior officials, including Chief Secretaries, Commissioner Secretaries, and the Managing Directors and CEO's of various banks that were present in the meeting.
