Director Meteorological Centre Srinagar, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, told Rising Kashmir that, as forecast, light snowfall occurred in some plains, while comparatively heavier snowfall was recorded in the higher reaches.
“Gulmarg witnessed very light snowfall during the past 24 hours, while Peer Ki Galli, Sinthan Top, Minimarg, Sadhna Top, Zojila Pass and Drass also received light snowfall,” he said.
According to the Meteorological Department, January 6 will remain partly to generally cloudy, with a possibility of light snowfall over isolated higher reaches of north, central and south Kashmir.
“From January 7 to 15, the weather is expected to remain partly cloudy. Partly cloudy conditions are likely from January 16 to 18, followed by generally cloudy weather on January 19 and 20,” Dr Ahmad said.
In its advisory, the MeT Department said a significant fall in minimum temperatures is expected till January 10, after which temperatures may rise by 1–2 degrees Celsius.
It also warned of moderate fog over the plains of Jammu division, with dense fog at isolated places likely to continue for the next two days.
Gulmarg recorded the lowest minimum temperature at minus 8.6 degrees Celsius, Srinagar at minus 3.6 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 6.8 degrees Celsius, Kokernag recorded minus 2 degrees Celsius, and Kupwara recorded minus 3.1 degrees Celsius.
Kashmir is currently in the grip of ‘Chillai-e-Kalan’, the 40-day harshest phase of winter, during which temperatures frequently plunge several degrees below freezing and snowfall chances are highest. Notably, the plains of the Valley are yet to receive snowfall this season.
