Srinagar, Apr 11: The J&K government has approved the upgradation of four District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) as Centres of Excellence, with Kupwara among the selected districts.

The project will be implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 40.83 crore and aims to strengthen teacher training systems across the Union Territory.

Education Minister Sakina Itoo said the initiative will bring a significant improvement in the quality of education by enhancing training facilities and academic support for teachers. She said Kupwara, along with Poonch, Kathua and Rajouri, has been identified for focused development under the plan.

“These Centres of Excellence will help strengthen teacher training and ensure better learning outcomes in schools,” Itoo said. She added that the upgraded DIETs will be equipped with modern infrastructure, improved teaching tools and enhanced academic resources.

The minister credited Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for backing the initiative. “This decision reflects the consistent support and clear vision of the Chief Minister towards improving the education sector in J&K,” she said.

Officials said the move is expected to boost the professional development of teachers and introduce updated teaching methods in classrooms. The Centres will also focus on capacity building, training workshops and skill enhancement programmes for educators.

Education experts believe that strengthening DIETs at the district level will have a direct impact on classroom teaching and student performance.

In districts like Kupwara, where schools face challenges due to terrain and limited resources, the upgraded institute is likely to play a key role in bridging gaps in teacher training.

The government expects that the initiative will help build a stronger academic foundation and improve overall educational standards across J&K.
