CBI wraps up Shopian probe

Will present ‘startling’ findings to HC on Dec 14

Wasim Khalid
Srinagar, Nov 18:
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probing Shopian twin rape and murder case has almost finalized its investigations and will present its findings before High Court on December 14.
Sources said CBI is busy in paperwork and would be presenting its finding, which are startling, before the High Court on December 14. “The investigation report is likely to comprise more than 200 pages and would discuss every aspect of the investigation pertaining to the case,” they said.

They said CBI is planning to present a power-point presentation of their investigations in the court. “The CBI team, which arrived in Valley during mid-September, visited the crime scene, questioned the doctors and witnesses during the course of investigations,” sources said.
CBI, according to sources, has filmed exhumation of bodies of the victims and confession made by Dr Nighat before Masjlis-e-Mashwarat - spearheading agitation against the twin rape and murder in Shopian- that she fudged the vaginal swabs sent for forensic examinations to Delhi.
In August, the experts, had found that DNA profile of tissue cells present in the slides do not match with the samples from the victims’ blood and viscera.
Sources said CBI investigation focused on Dr Nighat, who prepared the slides. CBI team conducted raids on Sub District Hospital Pulwama and confiscated records and quizzed staff to ascertain whose samples were used to prepare the fake slides. “In a shocking disclosure, Dr Nighat recently admitted that one slide was prepared by her taking samples from her own body. The CBI team has taken blood samples of Dr Nighat and her husband to verify the claim,” sources said.
They said forensic experts from AIIMS have ruled out that one of the ladies had died due to bleeding from the wounds. “Experts from AIIMS were called by the CBI to confirm the findings of the second post-mortem and look for additional forensic evidence from organs exhumed on September 28. The experts came to the conclusion that the younger victim did not appear to have been raped,” they said.
The second autopsy conducted by Dr Nighat had suggested rape and murder of two ladies.
Sources said that two witnesses who claimed to have seen blue coloured police vehicle, Tata-407 near the crime scene have retracted from their statements. “They told CBI officials that they made the statement under pressure,” they said.
CBI has also approached the Metrological department to know the temperature and possible flow of water in the Ranbiara Nallah, where from bodies of two ladies were recovered. CBI team had also talked to the locals residing on the banks of nallah to ascertain whether a person could drown in the stream while crossing it.
The Shopian twin rape and murder incident stirred massive unrest in Kashmir. It all started on May 30 when two women Asiya (17) and her 22 year old sister-in-law Neelofar were found dead under mysterious circumstances near Ranbiara Nallah in Shopian.
Locals alleged the duo were first raped and murdered and suspected hand of troopers in the gruesome incident.

Kashmiris have no friends
We are to be destroyed physically, economically and culturally

Abdul Majid Zargar

It is said and widely believed that Kurds have no friends. If permitted, I will add word “Kashmiris” to it. And to demonstrate the ground realities correctly, I will arrange the phrase to read as “Kashmiris and Kurds have no friends”
