Staff shortages being addressed: Sakeena Itoo

Baramulla, Apr 25: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Saturday said it is taking steps to address staff shortages in the education department, with a focus on filling vacant posts of Zonal Education Officers (ZEOs) and Chief Education Officers (CEOs).

Education Minister Sakeena Itoo said the issue of recruitment has remained a challenge since 2019. She added that the government is working on staff rationalisation and speeding up the process to fill critical positions across districts and zones.

Speaking to reporters here, the minister said the administration is aware of the gaps in the system and is taking corrective measures.

Several schools are functioning without headmasters, while many zones do not have permanent Zonal Education Officers. Many districts continue to operate without full-time Chief Education Officers, affecting overall administration and monitoring.

"The government is committed to improving institutional efficiency and ensuring that academic standards do not suffer due to administrative gaps," Itoo said. "The focus remains on strengthening the system at all levels so that schools function smoothly."

The minister said the government led by Omar Abdullah is focused on public welfare and inclusive development. "Education remains central to this vision, with emphasis on expanding access and improving infrastructure," she said.

Itoo described education as a key driver for building a progressive society. She said the government is working to ensure better facilities and opportunities for students, especially girls and those from marginalised communities.

Highlighting a newly inaugurated science block, she said the facility will strengthen academic capacity by offering modern laboratories and improved classroom space. "Such infrastructure will encourage more students, particularly girls, to pursue science education," she added.

On women’s education, the minister said women play a vital role in shaping society. "Empowering women through education leads to stronger families and communities. The girl students must pursue careers based on their interests and ambitions," she said.

Itoo acknowledged the challenges faced by women but said they have consistently proven their ability by holding key positions and contributing to decision-making at higher levels in Jammu and Kashmir.

"The government will continue to prioritise reforms in the education sector to ensure better outcomes for students and a stronger institutional framework," the minister said.
