Ganderbal, Jan 09: In an unusual display of personal commitment to public safety, a traffic police team in Ganderbal spent money from their own pocket to fill dangerous potholes at Beehama, preventing what officials described as “imminent accident risks” for daily commuters. According to locals, three spots in Beehama—near Shaheed Showkat Memorial Pump, Mistari Gali, and the main Beehama Chowk—had developed deep potholes that were disrupting traffic flow and posing threats to motorists. The traffic team noticed the repeated complaints from commuters and decided to take action themselves when no immediate support arrived. One of the policemen said the potholes were not only obstructing smooth movement but were also hazardous. “At Shaheed Showkat Memorial Pump, the pole cut had exposed iron rods. It was a clear accident risk. We didn’t want anyone to get injured or lose their life, so we closed it ourselves,” he said. He said that no outside contribution was made, and the repair was done purely out of concern for public safety. “There was no help from anyone. One auto driver offered to transport material without charging, even though he didn’t know where it was being taken. A contractor also contributed later,” he added. The officer said the act was not about personal credit but about collective responsibility. “If we feel our shop is ahead or our business is ahead, we should all step forward. Everyone should contribute. We become busy by making others happy,” he said, urging the community to take ownership of public spaces. Residents appreciated the effort, saying such commitment from frontline personnel sets an example for the administration and the public alike.
