Ganderbal, Apr 30:A children’s park constructed last year in Block Gund at an estimated cost of several lakhs is yet to be made operational.
The park, located along the scenic banks of River Sindh at Ramwari Gund, was envisioned as a recreational space for children and families, while also serving as a stopover for tourists travelling towards Sonamarg. However, the absence of basic play equipment has rendered the facility non-functional since its completion.
Locals allege that due to prolonged neglect, the condition of the park is deteriorating day by day rapidly. “Walls are deteriorating and some iron structures are damaged. Despite spending lakhs, the park is of no use to the public,” said a resident, expressing disappointment over the situation.
Residents further claimed that no concrete steps have been taken by the Block authorities to make the park operational. They stressed that the installation of essential equipment is crucial to make the facility usable for children.
Highlighting its importance, locals said Gund, being a tehsil headquarters, lacks any proper recreational space for children. “This park could provide a much-needed space not only for kids but also for elders to spend time. It can even host small gatherings and community events if developed properly,” another local said.
People of the area have also put forward key suggestions, including banning private use of the land such as storage of walnuts and construction material, and preparing a structured five-year development plan for the park.
They urged the concerned Block Development Officer to personally visit the site and assess its potential. Locals also appealed to the MLA and Member of Parliament to intervene and allocate funds for the park’s development.
Despite repeated attempts by this reporter to bring the issue to the notice of authorities, no response has been received so far.
