Kanehama orchids turned into gambling den

Rising Kashmir News
Srinagar, Dec 14:
The residents of Hamzah Colony, Kanehama of Tehsil Choodara Sunday said that some unscrupulous people of their area have made orchids as den by turning them into betting, gambling, and card playing zone.
A delegation of elderly people from Kanehema came to Rising Kashmir and said that teenagers have made several of the orchids their gambling dens. “They not only squander money in this activity, but they have also made these spots for selling drugs,” said one the residents, adding that during the festive time the activity is on surge.
The elders said that they tried to clamp down on this activity, but alleged that the gamblers are enjoying the patronage of the police.
“Our efforts apparently didn’t disturb the activity of the gamblers and they are still active,” said one of the elders adding that to support their gambling and drug habits teenagers have resorted to burglaries. “Some of the gamblers who are unable to pay back or have huge debts have even gone underground and it is they who resort to thefts to repay their debts,” he said.
However, Station House Officer (SHO) Nowgam, Nazir Ahmad said that they raided several areas recently and booked various gamblers in the area. “We need cooperation of the public to track down the gamblers and people must feel free to call us about gamblers activity,” said Ahmad adding that they will increase their operations to check this menace.
