Srinagar, Apr 26: Authorities are planning to establish dedicated sewage treatment plants (STPs) for dwellers in Dal Lake to improve waste management and protect the fragile ecosystem.
Vice Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA), Manzoor Qadri, told Rising Kashmir for the first time, authorities are planning to set up separate STPs specifically for lake dwellers.
He said the proposed project, estimated at Rs 212 crore, is expected to be funded under the Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP). A Detailed Project Report (DPR) has already been prepared and submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs for approval.
He further said that 603 out of a total 650 houseboats in Dal Lake have been connected to the sewage treatment system and only 47 houseboats are yet to be connected.
“There are 650 houseboats in Dal Lake, of which only 47 remain unconnected, while the rest have been linked to the sewage treatment system,” Qadri said.
He said that the houseboats are currently connected to two Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). “One STP is located at Brari Nambal and the other at Nallah Amir Khan,” he said.
Qadri further stated that six STPs are presently functional across Srinagar. “In addition, a new STP is being set up in the Gupt Ganga area with a capacity of 30 million litres per day (MLD),” he added.
The LCMA official said notices have been issued to the owners of the remaining 47 houseboats, directing them to realign their systems with the sewage network at the earliest. “We have also taken up the matter with the J&K Tourism Department and requested its intervention,” he said.
The initiative is part of efforts to protect Dal Lake and its basin, including Nigeen Lake, from rising pollution levels, especially in light of recent reports highlighting the shrinkage of the waterbody.
