Ganderbal, Jan 09: The world-famous Shallabugh Wetland in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district has come alive with the arrival of nearly 2.5 lakh migratory birds, signalling the beginning of the winter migration season in the Valley.
The wetland, one of the largest in Kashmir and declared a Ramsar Site, has witnessed a significant rise in bird population over the past few weeks, officials said.
Block Forest Officer Shallabugh, Aijaz Ahmed, said the arrival marks an important phase in the annual migratory cycle. "Shallabugh is a Ramsar site and a major destination for water birds. A large number of migratory species come here from various countries,” he said.
Ahmed said that resident birds stay in the habitat for the rest of the year, while the winter months bring in fresh flocks from Central Asia, Russia, Siberia, China and even the Philippines. “Roughly 2 to 2.5 lakh birds have already arrived. The wetland is in full bloom as far as waterfowl activity is concerned,” he added.
According to officials, nearly 30 to 40 species have been recorded this season, including Mallard, Pochard, Shoveler, Pintail, Common Teal, Shelduck and several other species that use Kashmir’s wetlands as resting and feeding grounds during their migratory journey.
The officer said the department is continuously working under an integrated wetland management plan to maintain and enhance the habitat. “We assess where pools need to be created or where habitat improvement is required. Maintaining an adequate water level is crucial for these birds,” he said.
Ahmed added that proper water management and habitat restoration ensure the wetland remains conducive for both resident and migratory species throughout the season.
Officials also said that improved conservation efforts and increased monitoring have contributed to stable bird arrivals in recent years, though challenges such as encroachment, siltation and human interference persist.
